Police warn against dangers of 48 Hour Challenge
BECKY VARGO • YESTERDAY AT 8:00 AM" One of the latest social media challenges has yet to be a problem in the Tri-Cities area, but local law enforcement officials say its time for parents to talk to their children about it before it starts.
“Yes, aware,” said Grand Haven Public Safety Director Jeff Hawke when asked about the 48-Hour Challenge. “This is a really bad idea.”
The 48-Hour Challenge encourages children to disappear for 48 hours. They receive points each time their name is mentioned on social media.
The Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office has not had dealings with this situation, according to Capt. Derek Christensen, who oversees school resource officers.
“The potential for exhausting first responder, support services and other emergency-related resources is tremendous in this outlined scenario,” Christensen said.
Hawke said that investigating a report of a missing teenager would involve multiple law enforcement agencies and many hours of work for those officers.
“Contact with family, friends and acquaintances, along with other investigative techniques would be required,” Hawke said. “This would represent a significant drain on law enforcement resources.”
The Public Safety Director said parents should talk to their kids about these things:
1. Stress, worry and overall emotional impact for parents, siblings, extended family, friends, teachers and more.
2. The drain on law enforcement resources and diverting those resources away from legitimate emergencies.
3. If parents perceive this as a possibility, lay out the consequence for the behavior in advance.
“Parents are frequently challenged to have a variety of difficult conversations about many harmful or potentially life-threatening topics with their children, and this situation is no different,” Christensen said. “We encourage parents to regularly engage their children in proactive and preventative educational conversations.”
Christensen said they ask parents to communicate with their children in an age appropriate dialog to help them understand the dangers and potential consequences of engaging in risky behaviors.
The social media game started in the United Kingdom and has been going on for a few months.
Michigan State Police say kids who try it will be in hot water.
"They could see time in the juvenile facility for something like this. We take these things very seriously," said Michigan State Trooper Amy Belanger for an October 2018 story for WILX.
The game potentially leaves law enforcement in a bind, of whether or not a person is truly missing.
"It's very similar to filing a false police report; you’re claiming that you’re missing in a roundabout way and then utilizing police resources to look for you and there's charges that could come along with that," Belanger said. "
