Feds ask ABQ to repay $1.4M in housing grants

The federal government is seeking full repayment of about $1.4 million in grant funds used to support housing programs in Albuquerque.

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development also has declared the city a “high-risk grantee” — a designation that could result in a freeze on Albuquerque’s ability to tap into its Community Development Block Grant funds if there’s no improvement, federal officials say.

It isn’t clear how much money is at stake, but HUD warned the city that

it’s imposing special conditions on Albuquerque’s grant funding this year and that failing to comply could result in a halt to “the city’s ability to draw down from its HUD accounts,” according to a federal spokeswoman.

The department has raised questions about the city’s recordkeeping, oversight and administration of federal money for housing programs that help low-income people. Some of the deficiencies have been flagged repeatedly, according to a letter from HUD to the city this fall.

Mayor Richard Berry’s administration, meanwhile, says it has assembled a team of experts within City Hall to address the HUD findings. The city also hopes to hang on to some or all of the $1.1million in grant money targeted for repayment.

About $330,000 already has been repaid.
