Million-dollar cocaine bust
They were in Colombia to stop drug trafficking. Instead, the Army says the soldiers smuggled cocaine into the U.S. and sold it on the streets.

Three staff sergeants charged with keeping illegal drugs out of the United States were actually using military aircraft to smuggle hundreds of pounds of cocaine from Colombia into the states, the Army said.

The staff sergeants, all assigned to the 204th Military Intelligence Battalion, face charges that include importing and distributing about 200 pounds of cocaine over a two-year period.

A fourth soldier, Spc. Francisco Rosa, 25, pleaded guilty Aug. 10 to several related charges.

Still awaiting courts-martial are Staff Sgts. Daniel Rosas, 23; Victor J. Portales, 24; and Kelvin G. Irizarry-Melendez, 26.

An attorney for the suspect at the center of the case, however, said the soldiers were caught up in an “overzealous prosecution.”

Capt. Steven Slawinski, who is representing Staff Sgt. Rosas, told Army Times in a phone interview Aug. 11 that he has filed a motion to have charges dismissed that he believes are redundant.

The Army alleges the soldiers conspired to use U.S. military aircraft to smuggle cocaine from Apia air base in central Colombia to Biggs Army Airfield at Fort Bliss, Texas."

There's a bigger picture, here.

It's about both the mindset and skills necessary to stop a threat who does not want to stop.

There are plenty of recreational pharmaceuticals that will produce this type of both psychologic and physiologic alterations.

Even without that mitigating factor, we have seen that sheer willpower can very well help a person - whatever their goals may be - to fight literally until the moment their blood pressure drops low enough that they are rendered unconscious. That these individuals can be mortally wounded: aka "walking dead," and yet still accomplish their goals.

While as a law-abiding citizen - or just a smart person who does not wish to become addicted to a harmful substance! - it's hard if not impossible to take advantage of the former, the latter is something that we can harness towards our own just causes. Again, look at the brave Stacy Lim.

Train to be mentally tough, to truly internalize that "good guys don't die" mentality and to "fight through," to realize that if we quit the fight before that literal half-gallon of milk winds up on the pavement (ever actually see just how much liquid that happens to be?), then it is us who decided to quit.

Train to be physically unstoppable. By this, I don't mean that we need to win CrossFit Games, rather, that we should at least know and be somewhat proficient in, say, using our support/reaction/"weak" hand to draw from our strong side holster as well as to successfully engage the threat, using only that hand. "

The county district attorney overseeing Albuquerque Police has gone on the record in the ABQ Free Press, saying that sympathetic police have informed her that others on the force may intend to do her physical harm.  She told the recently established alternative weekly:

"I don’t think they’re going to kill me, but I have been told to fear for my safety,"

The DA, Kari Brandenburg, has been under massive pressure from the APD thanks to her decision to charge two officers with murder in the death of homeless camper James Boyd last spring. The image of Boyd being shot down while retreating from police in the foothills east of the city went viral, leading to major demonstrations locally and heightened interest shortly thereafter when the U.S. Department of Justice issued a scathing report on years of excessive force by the APD.
More recently, in what was perceived as an act of preemptive retaliation before Brandenburg had even filed the murder charges, police announced that they were investigating her for intimidation and bribery of witnesses in relation to a burglary case involving her son. In spite of that, Brandenburg maintained her cool, answering those accusations and not backing down on the murder charges."

" New Mexico businesses have a new enemy that attacks their productivity, the health of their workers and even their bottom lines -- methamphetamine.

The homemade drug is becoming so popular and easy to manufacture -- most often by using common household ingredients or over-the-counter medication such as pseudophedrine, that Albuquerque Police suspect it is responsible for nearly half of all crimes they see on the streets. Police point to a rising crime rate in home invasion burglaries, identity theft, and fraud as evidence of meth's impact.

Even crimes such as identity theft and credit fraud are so highly linked to meth use, that police and federal Drug Enforcement Agents (DEA) almost regularly will call a fraud investigator to the scene of a suspected meth house.

John Walsh of the Albuquerque Police Department says not all businesses are affected by meth, but explains that meth users will go to all extremes to get money to buy meth, in many cases committing burglary and theft to obtain credit cards, bank accounts, and social security numbers.

In many instances, those victims of fraud and identity theft are businesses, Walsh said.

He cites as an example the murder of real estate investor R.J. Schaefer in November, which led to the arrests of five people who broke into Schaefer's home because, Walsh says, the group wanted money for drugs. The murder struck the business community especially hard because of Schaefer's close association with so many local business people.

Police were given the lead they needed when the suspects attempted to buy a cell phone and security system using Schaefer's credit card and also tried to cash a $2,000 check written on his bank account.

It is nearly impossible to determine how many crimes are linked to meth use, mainly because police don't track statistics that way. But its effect on businesses is evident.

George Stanfield, president of the New Mexico Banker's Association and southwest division executive director of Bank of the West, says he has seen fraud go up year after year and it is still steadily climbing. He says the industry's focus has been on educating customers of the dangers of identity theft, primarily because the loss falls heavily on banks or merchants "
