MELTING POT

The melting pot is a metaphor for a heterogeneous society becoming more homogeneous, the different elements "melting together" into a harmonious whole with a common culture or vice versa, for a homogeneous society becoming more heterogeneousthrough the influx of foreign elements with different cultural background with a potential creation of disharmony with the previous culture. Effects of modulation frequency and field strength

Bawin and her coworkers have reported changes in binding of calcium after exposure of avian brain

tissue to nonionizing electromagnetic radiation. Because calcium is intimately involved in the electrical

activity of the brain, their results reveal a heretofore unrecognized potential for nonionizing radio-

frequency radiation to affect biological function. We have verified and extended their findings. The

forebrains of newly hatched chickens, separated at the midline to provide treatment-control pairs, were

labeled in vitro with radioactive calcium. Samples of tissue were exposed for 20 minutes in a Crawford ir-

radiation chamber to 147-MHz radiation, which was amplitude modulated sinusoidally at selected fre-

quencies between 3 and 30 Hz. Power densities of incident radiation ranged between 0.5 and 2 mW cm -2.

Compared with nonirradiated samples, a statistically significant increase in efflux of calcium ions (P <

0.01) was observed in irradiated samples at a modulation frequency of 16 Hz and at a power density of

0.75 mW cm -2. Our data confirm the existence of the frequency "window" reported by Bawin et al., as

well as a narrow power-density "window" within which efflux of calcium ions is enhanced.

1. INTRODUCTION

Calcium plays an important role in the biochemical and

biophysical functions of many types of cells. It is a coupling

factor between excitation and contraction in muscle and in

glandular secretion, and serves as an intermediate in hor-

monal action on several target organs such as the heart,

bladder, bone cells, adipocytes and melanocytes

[Rasmussen, 1970]. Attachment of fibroblasts to support-

ing structures and chemotaxis by neutrophils require the

presence of calcium [Boucek and Snyderman, 1976].

Changes in calcium binding affect physical properties of

membranes such as deformability and permeability

[Changeaux et al., 1967; Rasmussen, 1970].

Calcium is also intimately associated with many nervous-

system functions. It is required for the release of hormones

from the pituitary, adrenal cortex, and medulla

[Rasmussen, 1970], for the release of neurotransmitter

substances at presynaptic terminals, and for the regulation

of the resting-membrane potential [Frankenhauser and

Hodgkin, 1957; Katz, 1969].

In recent years, Adey and coworkers have reported that

the association of calcium with brain tissue can be altered

by exposure to low-frequency electric fields and to

amplitude modulated (AM) nonionizing electromagnetic

However, studies have shown that NEM radiation is

associated with changes in EEG patterns [Gavalas et al.,

1970; Bawin et al., 1973] and in behavioral endpoints, such

as interresponse times and performances involving operant

conditioning [Gavalas et al., 1970; Gavalas-Medici and

Day-Magdaleno, 1976; Sudakov, 1976; Medici and Sagan,

1977]. Therefore, changes in calcium binding may be

directly related to behavioral changes.

Because calcium is involved in many biological systems,

reports of radiation-induced changes need to be evaluated

to determine whether potential hazards exist for man. To

investigate the mechanism responsible for altered efflux of

calcium, we required a test system that could give positive

effects in our laboratory. This report describes our attempt

to replicate and extend the work reported by Bawin et al.

[1975]. Our results indicate that two factors are necessary

for NEM radiation to affect brain calcium. These factors

are power density and modulation frequency.

2. MATERIALS

2.1. RF exposure system.

Samples were exposed in a rectangular strip transmission

line (Crawford cell) constructed in-house of 1.5 mm (1/16 ")

(NEM) radiation [Kaczmarek andAdey, 1974; Bawin et al.,. aluminum sheet (Figure 1). The line is 60 cm long and has a
